Understanding ibogaine treatment
Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid derived from the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub native to West Africa. It is often discussed as plant medicine or alternative medicine for drug addiction, especially opioid addiction, but its proposed therapeutic benefits do not make it a routine or approved form of addiction treatment.
In California, ibogaine remains a Schedule I controlled substance and has no FDA approval for any indication. A Malibu clinic cannot lawfully administer ibogaine outside an FDA-authorized research protocol. California licensing does not create a Malibu exception to federal law, a point consistent with the federal controlled-substance scheduling framework.
That distinction matters. A treatment center may offer residential treatment, detoxification, psychotherapy, medication support, trauma work, nutrition, and aftercare while separately discussing international options. It may also use psychedelic-adjacent language that does not clearly state what substance, jurisdiction, clinician, or legal authority is involved.
Some overviews describe ibogaine treatment models as intensive recovery options. In Malibu, the first question should remain direct: is actual administration being offered on site, through research, or only through a referral or concierge arrangement?
